Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001 for ages, but you know, the price tag is just… insane. So I thought, why not try to make one myself? Yeah, I know, it sounds crazy, but I was determined to give it a shot.
First thing I did was gather a ton of pictures and information online. I mean, everything I could find about this watch. I studied the rose gold case, the hobnail bezel, the clean, elegant dial – everything. I wanted to know this watch inside and out.
Then came the hard part – finding the right materials. I couldn’t exactly use real rose gold, obviously, so I had to find something that looked similar but wouldn’t break the bank. I ended up going with a high-quality stainless steel with a rose gold-colored coating. It wasn’t perfect, but it was close enough.
Next, I had to figure out how to actually make the watch parts. This was a whole new world for me. I spent hours watching videos and reading articles about watchmaking. It was tough, I’m not gonna lie. I messed up a lot, but I kept at it.
- I started with the case. I carefully shaped the steel using some basic tools I had lying around. It took forever, but eventually, I got it to look somewhat like the Calatrava’s case.
- Then I moved on to the bezel. The hobnail pattern was a real pain to replicate. I tried different methods, but it was difficult to get that precise, textured look. I think the end product was good, just not like the original.
- The dial was probably the most challenging part. I managed to find a simple white dial that was the right size, but I had to paint the hour markers and the Patek Philippe logo by hand. My hands were shaking the whole time!
- For the movement, I just bought a cheap quartz movement online. I knew it wouldn’t be a mechanical masterpiece, but I just needed something to make the hands tick.
After weeks of work, I finally put all the pieces together. It wasn’t easy, and there were definitely some moments where I wanted to give up. But I pushed through, and eventually, I had something that resembled a Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001.
It is not as good as the original, of course. The details aren’t as sharp, the materials aren’t as luxurious, and the movement is just a simple quartz. But you know what? I made it with my own two hands, and that’s something I’m really proud of.
It has been a fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. Maybe one day I’ll be able to afford the real deal, but until then, I’ll be happy wearing my homemade version. It is a good story to tell, right?
