So, I decided to remake the PRADA Small Prada Galleria Saffiano Leather Bag, the one you see in specialty stores. It all started when I saw this beauty in a shop window and thought, “I can totally make that!” I mean, how hard could it be, right?
First, I went online to look for some good-quality Saffiano leather. Found a decent supplier after a few days of digging around. I ordered a few square feet, just enough for this project, and some extra in case I messed up. While waiting for the leather to arrive, I started sketching out the bag’s design. I used the pictures I took at the store as a reference, trying to get all the measurements just right.
- Bought Saffiano leather online.
- Sketched the bag design based on store photos.
- Gathered all my tools: cutting mat, rotary cutter, needles, thread, etc.
When the leather finally arrived, it was go time. I carefully measured and cut the leather according to my sketches. This was the trickiest part because one wrong cut and you’ve ruined a good piece of leather. I took my time, double-checking every line before cutting.
Next, I started assembling the pieces. I hand-stitched some parts for that authentic look and used a sewing machine for the larger sections to save time. It was a bit of a learning curve, figuring out the right tension and stitch length, but I got the hang of it after a few tries.
The iconic PRADA logo was another challenge. I decided to emboss it onto a separate piece of leather and then attach it to the bag. I practiced a few times on scrap leather to get the pressure and heat just right, and it turned out pretty decent.
Finally, I added the finishing touches: the handles, the zipper, and the inner lining. I chose a soft fabric for the lining to give it that luxurious feel. After hours of work, the bag was finally done.
Honestly, it wasn’t perfect. There were a few imperfections here and there, but overall, I was pretty proud of myself. I carried it around for a few days, and it held up pretty well. Plus, I got a few compliments, which was a nice bonus!
Reflections
Looking back, it was a fun and challenging project. I learned a lot about leatherworking and sewing. Would I do it again? Maybe. It’s a lot of work, but it’s also pretty rewarding to see the finished product. Plus, it’s way cheaper than buying the real thing!
So if you are thinking about remaking a designer bag like this, I would say go for it! Just be prepared to put in the time and effort. It is not an easy project, but you can get it done, just like I did.
